II.
Last night I went out, quietly down any alley,
staying close to the shadows,
the car parked a few blocks down. I didn't want to be seen. The
master told
me I need to get out, and sHe is always correct. Get out and get what
you can
while your mummy's at home sleeping. No time to understand, cause
they lost
what they thought they were keeping. Then you'll see me in your sweet
dream,
and you won't hear me as I go out to start the car, all wrapped up
tightly in the
coat I borrowed from you.
So I went down to the station to look for her
there, looking through the crowds for a glimpse of her hair. Nothing
to see, but the crowd keeps staring at me. My, my.
And new York's a shanty town. Whenever I hear that crazy sound, I
don't look down.
It's true I enjoyed myself. I've been singing all
day, singing about nothing.
Master was correct, I went out and met up with some friends. I didn't
find
her though. So I drank, I drank gin over ice, so hot it was even in
the club.
Queenie, he bumped into me frowning. I looked at him thickly, my
tail
throbbing under the folds of the shift I'd thrown over this smooth
furry
meat that means I live. I saw his eyes dilate even more, but I could
tell he
was not aware, mmm, probably thinking about her too. Good, I
thought,
I could could make conversation. The usual distraction of social
engagement.
I said to him, lip service is all you'll ever get from me, and his
arm like a snake
slid round my waist and wriggled itself into my crotch, while he
stood behind
me and rubbed his tail against mine.
Now you're looking elsewhere for your own selfish
gain, I told him,
you were kissed by a witch one night, and later insisted your
feelings
were true. She was willing to give to you but you didn't care, and
now
you're waiting for more, but you've already had your share.
He let go and turned me to face him, looking a question, shrugging
his
shoulders. With your clean freshly polished nails glinting in the dim
light,
palms up asking, wanting an answer. Are you hoping that I can plant
one
there? I said, feeling cruel
as I did so.
And I was thinking, I always hear that crazy
sound, but I don't look down.
And I'm looking good, looking good.
So don't you wait up for me, I'm going to be late.
